Two suspected armed robbers have been shot dead by police following a robbery attack on a mobile money vendor at Tema Community 5 on Monday morning.
According to a statement from the Tema Regional Police Command, the incident occurred at about 8:30 a.m. when the suspects targeted a female mobile money operator at Aba Fosuah Plaza. One of the suspects, riding as a pillion passenger on a motorbike, approached the victim under the pretext of making a cash-out transaction.
Police say as the vendor attempted to process the request, the suspect pulled a pistol and demanded her bag containing cash. The victim resisted, leading to a struggle during which the second suspect joined in. In the course of the confrontation, the armed suspect shot the victim in the leg, forcing her to surrender the bag.
The attackers subsequently fled the scene on a black Royal motorbike.
A nearby police patrol team, deployed for security duties at an event in the area, responded swiftly to a distress call and pursued the suspects. Upon reaching a junction near a hotel at Community 6, the suspects reportedly opened fire on the police.
Officers returned fire, hitting both suspects, who fell off the motorbike with gunshot wounds. They were transported to the Police Hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival.
A search conducted on the suspects led to the retrieval of a 9mm pistol loaded with ammunition, three mobile phones, assorted SIM cards, a talisman, a motorbike key, and cash amounting to GH¢11,390. A Ghana Card belonging to the victim was also found in their possession.
The injured vendor is currently receiving treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation, identification, and autopsy.
The Tema Regional Police Command has assured the public of its continued commitment to maintaining safety and urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
