President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched the National Apprenticeship Programme, a nationwide initiative aimed at equipping young Ghanaians with practical skills for employment.
The programme is fully funded with an allocation of GHS 300 million in the 2025 national budget, as confirmed by the Ministry of Finance.
Speaking at the launch event, President Mahama announced that the initiative is projected to train over 500,000 young people across the country within the next five years.
The programme is part of the government’s broader strategy to tackle youth unemployment and promote technical and vocational education.
The first phase of the apprenticeship programme is set to begin in May 2025, targeting 10,000 apprentices from all districts in Ghana.
According to the president, this initial rollout will serve as the foundation for a nationwide scale-up.
“From 2025 onwards, the National Apprenticeship Programme will expand significantly, training a total of 100,000 apprentices over five years,” President Mahama stated.
The programme is expected to cover a range of vocational skills and will be implemented in collaboration with various stakeholders, including industry players, training institutions, and local authorities.
The launch marks a significant milestone in the government’s commitment to youth empowerment and job creation.
