President John Dramani Mahama has announced that participants in the newly launched National Apprenticeship Programme will receive monthly stipends, start-up tool kits, and certificates upon completion, as part of efforts to empower Ghana’s youth with practical, employable skills.
Speaking at the official launch of the programme under the theme “Skills for Prosperity: Empowering Ghana’s Future,” President Mahama reiterated that the initiative is designed to be inclusive and transformative.
“We are building an apprenticeship system that will leave no one behind,” the President stated.
The programme mandates that at least 45% of apprentice trainees must be female, while 5% must be persons living with disabilities.
Special attention will also be given to marginalized and vulnerable groups across the country to ensure equitable access to skills training and job opportunities.
The National Apprenticeship Programme, fully funded with GHS 300 million in the 2025 national budget, is projected to train over 500,000 young people over the next five years.
The first phase, set to roll out in May 2025, will train 10,000 apprentices from all districts nationwide, with an annual scale-up to reach 100,000 apprentices.
President Mahama emphasized that the programme aligns with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 manifesto, which prioritizes youth employment, technical education, and inclusive growth.
“This initiative is not only a response to youth unemployment,” he added, “it is a commitment to unlock the potential of every young Ghanaian, regardless of gender, ability, or background.”
