President John Dramani Mahama has outlined the core training modules under the newly launched National Apprenticeship Programme, reaffirming the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) pledge to create one million jobs for the youth, as promised in its 2024 People’s Manifesto.
At the official launch event, President Mahama announced that the programme will deliver structured, high-quality vocational training to over 500,000 young people across the country over a five-year period.
The goal is to prepare the youth for gainful employment while supporting national development goals.
The apprenticeship programme will focus on four main training modules:
Agriculture
Manufacturing
Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
Vocational Skills Development
“These modules have been carefully selected to reflect the sectors with the highest potential for growth, job creation, and long-term economic impact,”President Mahama said.
He emphasized that the National Apprenticeship Programme is a key pillar of the NDC’s job creation strategy, designed to address the growing issue of youth unemployment and equip young Ghanaians with market-ready skills.
Backed by GHS 300 million in funding from the 2025 national budget, the initiative will begin its first phase in May 2025, training 10,000 apprentices from all districts, and scale up to reach 100,000 trainees annually.
The programme also includes monthly stipends, start-up tool kits, and certification for all participants, with a commitment to inclusivity ensuring that 45% of beneficiaries are women and 5% are persons living with disabilities, along with targeted support for marginalized and vulnerable groups.
