The Vice Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has donated $7,500 to support the surgery of a three-year-old boy, Patnam Kantam, who is suffering from a congenital heart defect known as a hole in the heart.
The generous contribution was made Thursday when Prof. Opoku Agyemang visited the National Cardiothoracic Centre at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where the boy is being prepared for surgery.
Patnam Kantam, who has been on medication since birth, was referred to the cardio centre of the korle-bu Teaching Hospital for surgical intervention.
The surgery is expected to take place in the coming weeks, with Prof. Opoku-Agyemang clearing the required medical bill for the procedure.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang who personally presented the donation, expressed her heartfelt gratitude towards the medical staff for their dedication to duty.
She said “I just want to express my appreciation for the care you have given him and you give to so many others in different circumstances. We heard the story, and I believe he has no clue what’s going on with him. UI feel rather privileged that it has been possible for us to come and give the support that is necessary.”
Head of the cardio centre, Dr. Kow Entsua-Mensah who received the donation, praised Prof. Opoku-Agyemang for not only the donation, but for also showing up at the centre in person.
“A lot of people will just send a dispatch with a cheque, but you have found time to personally see the child, the parents, and us. This is a very big gesture born out of the love you have for children in our country. We will schedule the child for surgery as soon as possible,” he said.
The father of the boy, Mr Abdul Majeed Kantam, expressed his profound gratitude to the NDC vice presidential candidate for the support.
He said “my son was born with a hole in his heart, he has been on medication since childbirth, and we were recently referred to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for surgery. I want to thank Professor Opoku Agyemang for her kindness, and I pray for the success of the NDC party in Saturday’s election,” he stated.
