The running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Professor Opoku Agyemang has taken to her X page to congratulate Efua Ghartey on her historic win as the first woman to be elected as president of the Ghana Bar Association.
Mrs Efua Ghartey, a seasoned lawyer of over 30 years polled 1,278 votes to beat her closest contender Agbesi Dzakpasu who polled 1060.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang who is also the first female chancellor of a Public University (Cape Coast University) praised Efua Ghartey’s achievement, saying it strengthens the narrative about expanding leadership beyond a single gender in the country’s national life.
She also highlighted the election of Victoria Barth as Vice President.
Prof Opoku-Agyemang wrote “Hearty congratulations to Efua Ghartey, the first woman to be elected as president of the Ghana Bar Association”.
“Special mention to Victoria Barth who is Vice President,”Professor”. This historic achievement is one that we are proud of because it strengthens the narrative about expanding leadership beyond a single gender in our national life.”
Professor Opoku-Agyemang expressed her best wishes to both Efua Ghartey and Victoria Barth, trusting that they will bring important reforms to the legal profession in Ghana while improving advocacy.
“I wish both of them the very best in this role and trust that they will bring important reforms to the legal profession in our dear country while improving advocacy,” she added.
Ghartey’s win has been hailed as an important milestone in the push for gender equality in Ghana’s legal profession.
Her leadership is expected to pave the way for more women to take up leadership roles in the profession.
