The Minority Caucus in Parliament has alleged that the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress and acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, Samuel Adu Gyamfi’s public display of distributing US dollars as captured in a video that circulated over the weekend was a symbol of arrogance amid economic hardship.
According to the caucus, Sammy Gyamfi was seen casually distributing bundles of US dollars to Evangelist Patricia Oduro, Better known as Nana Agradaa. They asserted that this display of financial recklessness was a betrayal of public trust and an insult to Ghanaians struggling with the depreciating Cedi, inflation, and the high cost of living. They further emphasized that it was hypocritical, especially coming from someone who had previously advocated for economic discipline and Cedi loyalty.
Speaking on behalf of the caucus, the member of Parliament for Walewale, Tia Abdul Kabiru Mahama argued that the incident was not an isolated act but indicative of a broader culture of abuse, impunity, and moral decay within the NDC government. They highlighted the contrast between businesses facing dollar shortages and a government official freely distributing foreign currency. They noted that while the Cedi had shown some signs of recovery, appreciating from approximately GHS 14.15 to GHS 13.14 per USD as of May 9, 2025, this incident undermined efforts to stabilize the economy.
They also expressed disappointment with the government’s silence on the matter, noting the lack of response from the Presidency, the Ministry of Finance, and the National Security Secretariat, suggesting that the government’s inaction implied tacit approval of Mr. Gyamfi’s actions.
The Minority Caucus further argued that Mr. Gyamfi’s actions violated the President’s recently launched Code of Conduct for appointees, which requires them to prioritize national interests, avoid opulence, and be accountable for public funds. They challenged President Mahama to uphold his own rules and take action.
