In a call to action aimed at safeguarding Ghana’s rapidly expanding digital landscape, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations,  Samuel Nartey George, officially launched the 2025 National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM 2025) at the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre Auditorium.

The Minister’s remarks highlighted the urgent need for a unified approach to cybersecurity, emphasizing that the same technology driving national growth also presents a growing risk of exploitation. Citing DataReportal’s Digital Report 2025, he noted that with 24.3 million Ghanaians now online, and 7.95 million active on social media, the country’s digital footprint is a prime target for cyber threats.

”The more citizens engage online for business, education, and entertainment, the greater the risks,” Sam George stated. “The same connectivity that fuels innovation also provides an avenue for exploitation by cybercriminals.”

He shared alarming statistics from the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), revealing that financial losses due to cybercrime in 2024 amounted to over GHS 23 million, with another GHS 14.9 million lost in the first half of 2025. The Minister also warned that critical data from 35 Ghanaian organizations, including government ministries, banks, and hospitals had been found exposed on the dark web, signaling a potential gateway to national-level compromises.

The 2025 campaign, themed “Building a Safe, Informed, and Accountable Digital Space,” highlights a shared responsibility. The Minister stressed that safety in cyberspace must be treated with the same urgency as physical safety, noting that all citizens deserve protection from fraud, scams, and blackmail. He also announced that his ministry is working on amendments to the Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038) to better address the evolving digital threats.

In his address, Sam George commended collaborative efforts with law enforcement, which have led to significant arrests. Just last month, a joint operation with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) resulted in the arrest of 39 individuals in Tema, as part of a crackdown on cybercrime syndicates.

”To those exploiting foreign nationals to perpetrate cyber fraud, we are on your trail, and we will bring you to justice,” he warned.

The Minister concluded his remarks by urging the media to play a crucial role in raising public awareness and calling on all stakeholders from government agencies and businesses to individual citizens to actively participate in the NCSAM campaign. “Securing our digital space is a shared responsibility. It is only through strong partnerships and collaboration that we can succeed,” he said.
