Following directives from President Akufo Addo for schools from Kindergarten to the tertiary to reopen starting from the 15th of January, 2021, the Ministry of Education in collaboration with Zoomlion Ghana Limited has begun the disinfection of all tertiary schools across the country.
The exercise which kick started on Wednesday, in the Ashanti Regional, Kumasi is aimed at the curbing the spread of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic as students return to their various campuses after over a 9-month break.
The exercise is covering both public and private institutions in the region including universities, nursing training colleges, Colleges of Education, Skills Development Institutions, among several others.
Tertiary Institutions that benefited from day one of the excercise included, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology(KNUST), Ghana Baptist University College, GIMPA(Kumasi Campus), Valley View University College(Kumasi campus), and the JACCD Professional Developer Centre.Open spaces in these schools as well as lecture halls, various faculties, libraries, offices and other facilities were all disinfected.
Head of the Chemistry Department at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Scienceand Technology. Prof. Godfred Darko in an interview with the media was elated about the usefulness of the excercise and how it is going to keep both student’s and school authorities safe as they prepare to resume regular academic work.
“We are happy the government and our friends from Zoomlion have come to disinfect the campus”, he said.
Prof. Darko gave the assurance the the school is ready to receive students back to campus as the university has put in place elaborate measures to ensure that the students will be safe.
Assistant Registrar of the Ghana Baptist University College, Fred Degraft Adjei applauded government for putting in adequate measures to combat the covid-19.
He however appealed for some financial support from government for private universities and other private educational institutions as the corona virus outbreak has affected them financially.
