Probably, Professor Baffour Agyeman-Duah is the only NPP man who supports the recent comments made by the former President to the effect that the judiciary is corrupted.
Speaking at an event organized by NDC for lawyers in the party in Accra, John Mahama said the public has no trust in the judiciary again hence there was the need to restore the trust as soon as possible.
“Recently, so badly has the image of our judiciary deteriorated that many of our citizens openly make a mockery of our justice system and of our justices.
The phrase ‘Go to court’ is these days met with derisive laughter instead of hope that one will truly get justice if he went to the court“, Mahama stated.
His comments have been widely criticized by some lawyers and retired judges as well as the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG). They believe the former President is trying to drag the judiciary into the mug.
But speaking on Ghana Tonight on TV3, the former United Nations Senior Governance Advisor said the recent same-way thinking by justices of the Supreme Court presents a major challenge to the judicial system of Ghana.
Professor Agyemang Duah questioned how 5, 7, or 9 judges could reason the same way all the time.“I do not believe that these justices should think the same way and should agree on the same thing all the time.
That in itself will be a serious problem. If we take recent cases that have been the case but I think previously that has not been the case.
Probably, the weight of the recent cases was perhaps such that the justices could do nothing other than agree on this kind of case.
That notwithstanding I think the former president is right and I agree that if people lose confidence in the judiciary that represents a major challenge to our democracy.
But my point is that in our case it is not just the judiciary and there is nothing wrong with him making that statement”, Agyemang Duah Stated.
