The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has detailed a comprehensive strategy aimed at revitalizing public transportation and improving the daily commute for citizens across the country.
Speaking during a recent media briefing, Nikpe announced that he has initiated high-level re-engagement talks with the Managing Directors of the nation’s primary transport operators, including Metro Mass Transit Limited, Intercity STC, and Intercity Coaches. The discussions are centered on reviewing current operational frameworks and identifying critical areas for expansion and efficiency.
The Minister confirmed that several buses have already been deployed to key metropolitan routes to ease congestion. To ensure these resources are used effectively, the revealed that the Ministry is conducting rigorous daily monitoring of passenger traffic and vehicle performance.
“We are currently assessing daily movement patterns,” Nikpe explained. “Based on the empirical data we gather, we will increase the fleet on specific routes where demand is highest to ensure a smooth, reliable, and predictable service for all passengers.”
A major pillar of the new strategy involves fostering stronger collaborations with the private sector. Joseph Nikpe noted that the Ministry is exploring partnerships to bring in additional buses specifically dedicated to supporting workers during the morning and evening peak hours.
To jumpstart this initiative, the Ministry, according to the Minister has already recalled several previously inactive buses into service. This immediate measure allows the government to study real-time demand while providing instant relief to commuters.
The Minister emphasized that the ultimate goal is to achieve a sustainable balance between operational efficiency and service availability.
By optimizing both public and private bus services, the Ministry aims to build a transportation network that is not only accessible but also robust enough to meet the evolving needs of the Ghanaian public.
