The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) has conferred an Honorary Doctor of Science (DSc) degree on Dr. Ibrahim Mahama in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Ghana’s mining, engineering and industrial development.
The honorary degree was awarded at a special congregation held at the university, where Dr. Mahama was celebrated for his pioneering role in building one of the largest indigenous mining and engineering firms in Africa and for advancing local content and Ghanaian participation in the extractive industry.
Delivering a citation at the ceremony, UMaT lauded Dr. Mahama’s entrepreneurial vision, innovation and commitment to excellence, noting that his work has opened opportunities for Ghanaian companies to compete directly with multinational firms in large-scale mining operations.
“Dr. Ibrahim Mahama’s achievements demonstrate how indigenous enterprise, driven by discipline and innovation, can transform strategic sectors of our economy,” the citation noted.
Speaking at the event, President John Dramani Mahama described the honour as well deserved, highlighting his brother’s early passion for engineering and his rise through hard work and professionalism.
“He built his name in the mining sector by delivering on time, on budget and to standard,” the President said. “Today, his company stands as a testament to what Ghanaian enterprise can achieve through merit and resilience.”
President Mahama also emphasised that the recognition went beyond business success to include Dr. Mahama’s philanthropic efforts and support for education and national development.
“This honour reflects not only excellence in enterprise, but a commitment to giving back to society,” he added.
In his acceptance remarks, Dr. Ibrahim Mahama expressed gratitude to the university and reaffirmed his support for higher education, research and skills development.
“I am deeply honoured by this recognition from an institution whose work is critical to Ghana’s industrial and technological future,” he said.
The conferment of the honorary doctorate underscores UMaT’s commitment to recognising individuals whose work aligns with its mission of promoting responsible mining, engineering excellence and sustainable development.
