With 73 days to go to the crucial December general elections, some lecturers from the University of Ghana in an unprecedented move on Tuesday, 24th September, 2024, took a stance when they hit the streets of Accra to campaign for the National Democratic Congress NDC and its Presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama.

The lecturers clad in the colours of the opposition party were seen at the Okponglo traffic light distributing flyers to drivers and passengers and engaging with other road users.

According to the lecturers their move was to spread the policies and vision of President John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress going into the December 7th election.

Speaking to journalists, former National Service boss, and lecturer at the Institute of African Studies University of Ghana, Legon,  Professor Michael Kpessa-White said the move was unprecedented as it was the first time lecturers have organized street campaign for a political party.

According to him, the group intends to hit the major streets of the capital, especially the main traffic lights to spread the message and policies of NDC.

“We want to move to all the traffic lights in Accra. We want to make sure the massages get to the people. Actually, this is the first time lecturers are on the streets. Today, we are at Okponglo traffic. Next, we will be at the under bridge and to the Accra Mall, etc., to campaign for change.”

“Today is the beginning and you have seen the numbers, next time, more lecturers would join, and we will continue hitting the street to engage with drivers, drivers mate, passengers and everyone to vote for change,” he stated.

Renowned climatologist and lecturer Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse said the street campaign was important to ensuring that Ghanaians who are always on the move are not left out of the NDC’s moves to spread its messages and vision for the party when given the opposrtunity.

“We have confidence in the leadership of John Mahama. We know he is the only person who can bring the needed change to address the numerous challenges facing the good people of this country.”

“We will continue our campaign from now till December 7 for both President Mahama and our parliament candidate in our various constituencies to ensure he also gets the majority in Parliament to enable him to implement his policies for Ghana.” She stated
