Fishermen in Axim, located in the Evalue Ajomoro Gwira constituency in the Western Region have expressed deep concern with the deterioration of their fishing business due to the bad policies of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government.
According to the fishermen one of their major challenges has been the rising costs of premix fuel which has forced them to rely on petrol.
The fishermen say the unavailability of affordable premix fuel has resulted in reduced catches and soaring fish prices.
These concerns were voiced out by chief fisherman of Axim, Nana Kojo Pegu during a durbar held as part of the campaign tour of NDC Vice presidential Candidate, Professor Opoku-Agyemang.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang is in the Western Region to galvanize support for party’s Flagbearer, John Mahama and Parliamentary candidates ahead of the December 7 elections.
Nana Kojo Pegu expressed confidence in former President John Mahama’s ability to revitalize the struggling fishing industry, citing his previous support for the sector.
“We beg Professor Opoku Agyemang and John Mahama to intervene; we’re dying,” he pleaded.
The fishermen vowed to cast their votes en masse for the NDC in the upcoming elections, hoping that a future NDC administration will provide much-needed relief to their industry, including subsidies for outboard motors.
They also requested that Professor Opoku-Agyemang convey their urgent need for assistance to John Mahama, emphasizing the critical nature of their situation.
On her part, Professor Opoku-Agyemang reassured the fishermen of NDC’s commitment to supporting the fishing industry.
“I am the daughter of a fisherman, I understand your challenges, and we’re committed to reviving the fishing industry,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said.
“The NDC will prioritize your needs, providing subsidies for outboard motors and addressing premix fuel costs.”
