President Mahama’s statement highlights the crucial role the private sector plays in achieving Africa’s vision of industrialization.
According to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, a robust and vibrant private sector is vital for inclusive and sustained economic growth, as it contributes directly to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Union Agenda 2063.
Mahama’s vision for Africa’s future emphasizes the need for strategic investments in infrastructure to unlock the continent’s vast economic potential, estimated at $3.4 trillion.
This can be achieved by promoting intra-African trade, industrialization, and value addition, particularly in sectors like manufacturing, technology, and agriculture.
The private sector’s involvement is essential in driving economic growth, creating jobs, and improving service delivery.
In Africa, the private sector accounts for 90% of jobs, 70% of gross domestic product, and 70% of all investment.
By leveraging this potential, Africa can accelerate its industrialization and achieve sustainable development.
Key areas where the private sector can contribute to Africa’s industrialization include:
- Infrastructure Development: Investing in critical infrastructure such as roads, ports, railways, and digital infrastructure to facilitate smooth and efficient movement of goods across borders.
- Industrialization and Value Addition: Promoting industries like manufacturing, technology, and agriculture to capitalize on Africa’s natural resources and foster homegrown innovation.
- Youth Empowerment: Equipping Africa’s youth with the necessary technology, vocational, and entrepreneurial skills to thrive in the industries of tomorrow.
- Good Governance and Anti-Corruption: Ensuring that public resources are used effectively and efficiently, and tackling corruption to create an environment conducive to investment and growth.
