Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has announced that it will resume spillage at the Weija Dam from Wednesday, September 9, 2026, following a rise in the dam’s water level to 45.2 feet.
According to GWL, the increase has been caused by heavy rains upstream of the dam and continued rainfall within the catchment area of the Densu River and its tributaries.
The company said the water level is approaching the 46-foot threshold, making the controlled release of water necessary as a precautionary measure to safeguard the dam.
GWL has consequently urged all residents living downstream of the Weija Dam to evacuate the area ahead of the spillage and remain alert to official evacuation directives.
Residents have also been advised to avoid activities that could expose them to danger during the exercise.
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), District Assembly, traditional authorities, Assembly Members, resident associations, and other relevant stakeholders have been asked to take the necessary precautionary measures and prepare for possible evacuation.
Communities identified as likely to be affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach and Ada Kopey, as well as surrounding communities.
Ghana Water Ltd said it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates, stressing that the safety of residents remains its priority.
The company has therefore appealed to the public to cooperate with authorities and adhere to safety instructions as the spillage begins.
