Director of Education, Research and Training at the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, Chief Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng, has announced a new digital enforcement system that will eliminate the need for drivers to physically present their licences during police checks.

In an interview on Monday, March 16, 2026, he explained that the move is intended to reduce direct interactions between motorists and police officers while improving transparency and compliance with traffic regulations.

“Now, we don’t need your physical licence. A person driving a motor vehicle who is required to produce a driver’s licence shall produce the driver’s licence number. You don’t need to carry the licence. You only have to remember your number. It might be on your phone, on a sheet of paper, in your wallet, or somewhere in the vehicle,” he stated.

Chief Superintendent Alexander Obeng also touched on new technology-driven traffic enforcement system aimed at reducing road traffic violations across the country.

“We have come up with an enforcement intervention called Trafitec GH, and it’s everywhere in every hope that the police are watching you, where ICT systems have been put in place. We have deployed our cameras on vehicles, some are on traffic poles, and some are on tripods.

“…With the law coming, if you commit certain offenses amounting to about 46 of them, police have the capability by using cameras or scanners to gather evidence and interact with you through a text message called EMV, electronic notice of violation,” he noted.

He noted that drivers will have 14 days to pay fines electronically through the Ghana.gov platform.

“The owner of the vehicle or the holder of the driver’s licence will have 14 days to make payment online using MoMo through the Ghana.gov platform and not to any individual police officer,” he stated.

Chief Superintendent Obeng also confirmed that the existing traffic law, Road Traffic Regulations 2012 (LI 2180), will soon be repealed and replaced with the Road Traffic Regulations 2026.

“Within weeks, it will be repealed. The Road Traffic Regulations 2026 will come and take over the old one we are all using.

“Police may, for the detection or photo registration of a traffic violation on the road, install, deploy or use manned or unmanned enforcement devices. Police have an interface where, once you mention your licence number, they can access your details,” he added.
