The Ghana Police Service has announced that the case file on the arrest of Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East, is being sent to the Attorney General’s Office. They want the Attorney General to look at the case and give advice on what to do next.
In a statement, the police said that Naa Koryoo and three others were warned about “transferring a gun without permission” and then released on bail.
Naa Koryoo was held at the Cantonments Police Station on Friday, June 7, after being asked to come in for questioning. This made NDC supporters angry, and they later gathered at the police station to demand her release.
The police statement said that she was arrested for having a gun and for the stabbing of the son of Mavis Hawa Koomson, who is the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East. This happened early in the morning on Sunday, June 2, 2024.
A man named Usman Haruna was arrested for the stabbing. He was kept in police custody and told to come back to court on Wednesday, June 19, 2024.
After Naa Koryoo was released on June 8, the NDC’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, gave a warning at a press conference. He said that arrests like this will not be accepted in the future.
The police are still investigating the case while the file is being sent to the Attorney General’s Office for them to study and give advice on what should be done.
