The Ghana Police Service has strongly denied allegations made by Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), regarding the recent arrest of three individuals found with firearms in Ofaakor. Asiedu Nketia claimed that senior police officials, including the Accra Regional Police Commander, CID Director-General, and Inspector-General of Police, had told him the arrests were ordered by higher authorities.
In a statement, the police called Asiedu Nketia’s claims “false and baseless,” emphasizing that the arrests were a result of legitimate law enforcement without any external influence. The suspects were caught at the Electoral Commission offices in Ofaakor with a Pump Action gun and ammunition.
The police maintain that none of the senior officers mentioned by Asiedu Nketia made any statements suggesting the arrests were orchestrated from above. They stress that the apprehension of the suspects was based on the evidence found at the scene.
Meanwhile, Asiedu Nketia addressed the media after the release of Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East, from police custody. He cautioned the police and security agencies to be careful in the lead-up to the 2024 elections, stating that no law should be used to intimidate citizens.
The police have issued a clear statement refuting Asiedu Nketia’s allegations, underlining that the three suspects were arrested when a Pump Action gun with four rounds of ammunition was discovered in their vehicle at the Electoral Commission offices in Ofaakor. The suspects have been cautioned and granted bail following the incident.
