Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, flagbearer leading the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has promised to give living allowances to important chiefs, smaller chiefs, and queen mothers if he becomes president.
He said this will help them have the power to assist the government’s work.
The Vice President said that his government would give traditional leaders the money they need to make their work helpful for the country’s growth.
Dr. Bawumia said these things when he talked to members of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs during his campaign tour on Monday.
“I want to change part of the Chieftaincy Act to give chiefs the power to help the government run the country. It will be good for everyone. We need to make the chiefs stronger so they can help the government. But making the chiefs stronger isn’t just about changing the law,” he explained.
“We also have to give money to the chiefs. If we don’t give money to the chiefs’ palaces, they can’t do the work we want them to do.”
“So my team working on my manifesto has looked at everything. We are saying that we have to pay living allowances to the important chiefs, and also to the smaller chiefs and the queen mothers. This way, we can have a complete chieftaincy system that has the power to help the government,” he said.
