John Dramani Mahama, the Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress, has pledged to prioritize the construction of the Yendi-Chereponi road if elected.
This promise was made during his three-day campaign tour in the Northern Region, specifically at the Chereponi Palace.
The Traditional Council, represented by Musa Nanyame, appealed to Mahama to complete the project, which was initially awarded under his administration but neglected by the current government.
Mahama expressed surprise that the project remained unfinished despite being contracted.
He assured the Chiefs and people of Chereponi that he would prioritize all abandoned projects in the North East region and nationwide under the “big push policy.” This policy aims to tackle long-standing development challenges.
The Yendi-Chereponi road is crucial for the region’s economic growth and social development. Its completion would:
- Improve Accessibility: Enhance connectivity between Yendi and Chereponi, facilitating trade and commerce.
- Boost Agriculture: Support agricultural activities, a primary livelihood source in the area.
- Enhance Education and Healthcare: Increase access to education and healthcare facilities.
The current state of the road is a concern, especially during the rainy season. The Ministry of Roads and Highways has acknowledged the importance of road infrastructure development in the region ¹.
It’s worth noting that the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, previously cut the sod for the construction of the 168.98-kilometer Tamale-Yendi-Tatale Road, which includes the Yendi-Chereponi section. However, the project’s status remains unclear.
