GES moves to resolve salary delays for newly posted teachers

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that concrete steps are being taken to address the concerns of newly posted teachers who picketed at its headquarters on Monday, June 23, over delays in salary payments and the issuance of staff identification numbers.

In a statement issued by the Service, the GES explained that the Ministry of Education has formally requested an extension of the expired financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance. The extension, once granted, will allow for the processing of nearly ten months’ worth of salary arrears and facilitate the issuance of staff IDs for affected personnel.

The affected teachers, who assumed duty in September 2024, have not received full salaries to date. Out of 12,807 graduates recruited that year, 2,113 have reportedly not been paid despite having been issued staff IDs. Additionally, 582 teachers have not received staff IDs at all due to issues such as mismatched Ghana Card details, incorrect SSNIT numbers, and instances of self-reposting without proper authorization.

GES indicated that a technical committee has been set up—including representatives from the aggrieved teachers—to streamline communication and monitor progress on the matter. The move comes after a nationwide staff validation exercise conducted in March 2025 uncovered anomalies in the recruitment and posting processes, which have since complicated the salary processing system.

GES Public Relations Officer, Daniel Fenyi, urged the affected teachers to remain calm, assuring them that “significant progress has already been made.” He noted that both immediate concerns and long-term reforms are being addressed to prevent similar delays in the future.

The statement also acknowledged challenges in engaging with teacher groups, citing frequent changes in group leadership as a barrier to sustained dialogue. GES is urging unified representation to improve communication and expedite the resolution process.

Importantly, the Service confirmed that a budgetary allocation has been made in the 2025 national budget to support payments to the unpaid teachers.
