The Government of Ghana has declared a period of national mourning following the tragic death of the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and seven others in a helicopter crash at Adansi in the Ashanti Region.
The announcement was made by the Chief of Staff, Mr. Julius Debrah, at the Presidency earlier today. He confirmed that the helicopter, which was carrying senior government officials and military personnel, crashed during a domestic operation, claiming all eight lives on board.
Among the deceased are:
Dr. Edward Omane Boamah – Minister for Defence
Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed – Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation
Alhaji Muniru Mohammed – Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Minister for Agriculture
Dr. Samuel Sarpong – Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
Mr. Samuel Aboagye – Former Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi West and Acting Deputy Director General of NADMO
Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala
Flying Officer Twum Ampadu
Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah
Mr. Debrah announced that President John Dramani Mahama has directed all national flags across the country to fly at half-mast for seven days as a mark of respect and national mourning.
“The President is deeply saddened by this devastating loss. We mourn the passing of dedicated public servants who gave their lives in service to our nation,” the Chief of Staff said.
He also assured that a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash is already underway, and further updates on funeral arrangements and official commemorations will be communicated in due course.
