Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, says Ghana’s banking industry is showing significant signs of strengthening, with improvements recorded in capital adequacy, asset quality and overall sector assets.
Addressing heads of banks in Accra, Dr. Asiama disclosed that the industry’s Capital Adequacy Ratio increased to 20.4% in June 2026, almost double the 10.6% recorded a year earlier.
The Capital Adequacy Ratio is a key measure of a bank’s ability to absorb financial losses and remain resilient against risks.
Dr. Asiama also disclosed that total banking-sector assets grew by 30.7% in June 2026, supported mainly by increases in deposits and shareholders’ funds.
Asset quality also improved considerably, with the industry’s Non-Performing Loan ratio declining to 16.1% from 23.1% over the same period last year.
The Governor welcomed the developments, describing them as evidence of progress within the financial sector and attributing the gains to collective efforts by institutions across the banking industry.
The improvements come at a time when Ghana’s broader domestic economy continues to show resilience despite uncertainty in the global economic environment.
Dr. Asiama said real GDP expanded by 6.4% in the first quarter of 2026, compared with 6.2% during the corresponding period in 2025, driven largely by the services and industry sectors.
Headline inflation also declined to 4.6% in July from 5.3% in June 2026, reflecting slower food inflation and relative stability of the exchange rate, which helped contain imported price pressures.
Despite the positive indicators, the Governor cautioned against complacency, pointing to continuing risks from the global environment.
He said developments in the Middle East and disruptions to global energy markets could affect crude oil prices, supply chains, inflation and financing conditions.
Dr. Asiama said the progress recorded so far provides a foundation for sustainable economic growth but stressed that banks must help ensure the gains translate into improved economic opportunities for businesses and households.
