In a comprehensive press briefing, Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh addressed a range of pressing national health issues, while also responding to the recent condemnable incident at Accra Regional Hospital on Sunday, August 17, 2025.
In his address, Akandoh underscored the complexity of the challenges facing the health sector and expressed his frustration over what he described as unfair personal attacks. He emphasized that resolving these issues demands the collective efforts of all stakeholders, not public criticism or discouragement.
The Minister highlighted the notable progress of the Mahama Cares program and announced forthcoming plans to broaden free primary healthcare services, while further stating that the government is committed to equipping hospitals with the necessary tools and resources to operate more effectively, and is actively working on the posting of unemployed nurses and midwives.
Speaking on the incident at Ridge Hospital, Mintah Akandoh clarified that he did not disregard the situation. He said that upon learning of the event, he immediately dispatched a team of directors to conduct an investigation. Following their report, he personally visited the hospital to assess the situation.
The Health Minister shared that the assault on the nurse had created widespread fear and panic among the staff, which was hampering their ability to perform their duties.
He revealed that his encounter with the individual involved in the assault, identified as Ralph, was coincidental. When questioned by the Minister, Ralph extended his hand to greet him and quietly requested an opportunity to explain his side of the story in the Minister’s office.
The Minister also explained that his visit was a gesture of support, aimed at boosting the morale of the hospital workers, reassuring patients, and engaging with hospital management to identify long-term solutions for improving service delivery at the facility.
He condemned the assault, urging the public to exercise patience with the health workers who often operate under immense pressure.
