President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana and China are set to conclude a zero-tariff trade agreement by the end of this month, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen economic cooperation between the two nations.
Speaking at a Presidential Investment Forum in Beijing, President Mahama said the agreement, once finalized, will open new opportunities for Ghanaian businesses and enhance trade competitiveness.
“Ghana and China have reached an agreement to conclude a zero-tariff framework by the end of this month,” President Mahama revealed. “This initiative will expand access for Ghanaian exports and deepen the strategic partnership between our two countries.”
The President noted that the policy forms part of China’s broader decision to extend its zero-tariff scheme to all 53 African countries, including Ghana.
The move, he said, demonstrates China’s commitment to supporting Africa’s economic growth and fostering equitable trade relations.
“China’s zero-tariff policy offers Africa a benchmark to negotiate equal or better terms with other global partners,” President Mahama stated. “We appreciate this gesture of friendship and cooperation which continues to strengthen South–South collaboration.”
During the same event, President Mahama announced that an Inter-Ministerial Committee will soon be inaugurated to conduct feasibility studies for the establishment of a Green Digital City in Ghana.
He explained that the project is designed to promote sustainable urban development and integrate digital technology with green energy solutions, positioning Ghana as a hub for innovation and environmentally conscious development in Africa.
“The Green Digital City will be implemented in phases over a twenty-year period, with the first phase expected to begin before 2029,” President Mahama disclosed.
The President emphasized that the initiative aligns with his administration’s broader vision to drive economic transformation through technology, sustainability, and international partnerships.
“Our goal is to ensure that Ghana leads in green and digital transformation across Africa,” he said. “We remain committed to building a future that is inclusive, innovative, and sustainable.”
