The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has announced the commencement of the final phase of the Kumasi–Anwomaso Transmission Line Upgrade and transformer enhancement at the Kumasi (Ahodwo) Substation, a major project aimed at improving electricity reliability and expanding power capacity in the Ashanti Region.
According to a press release issued on July 16, the works, which will begin on July 20, are being undertaken in collaboration with the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). The project is designed to address growing electricity demand driven by rapid population growth and commercial expansion in Kumasi.
The Ministry explained that Kumasi has, for years, depended on a 19-kilometre single-circuit transmission line linking the Anwomaso and Ahodwo substations. Although the infrastructure has served the city reliably, it has become overloaded and can no longer adequately meet increasing demand.
Under the upgrade, the existing 364MVA single-circuit transmission line will be replaced with a modern double-circuit line with a combined capacity of 978MVA. The enhancement is expected to more than double transmission capacity, improve the reliability and resilience of electricity supply, and provide sufficient capacity to support future residential, commercial and industrial development across Kumasi and the wider Ashanti Region.
The Ministry disclosed that about 90 percent of the project’s foundation works and 67 percent of tower assembly had been completed as of July 16. The remaining works involve dismantling the existing transmission line, erecting new transmission towers and installing new conductors.
To facilitate the safe execution of the final construction phase, the existing transmission line will be temporarily de-energised. As a result, customers supplied by the Kumasi (K1) and Anwomaso (K2) substations may experience localized power interruptions during scheduled construction periods. GRIDCo and ECG have assured the public that advance notices will be issued before each planned outage and that every effort will be made to restore power before peak evening demand.
In addition to the transmission line project, GRIDCo will replace one of the existing 66MVA transformers at the Kumasi (Ahodwo) Substation with a new 145MVA transformer. The Ministry said the upgrade will increase transmission capacity, improve operational flexibility, reduce pressure on existing equipment and further strengthen electricity supply across Kumasi and surrounding communities.
The Ministry urged residents to observe all safety instructions and avoid designated construction zones throughout the implementation period. It noted that while the temporary outages may cause some inconvenience, the project is expected to be completed within three months and will deliver a stronger, more reliable electricity network to support the long-term development of Kumasi, the Ashanti Region and Ghana.
