President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Damongo, the capital of the Savannah Region, will soon host a Catholic Science and Technology University along with a new regional hospital that will function as a teaching facility.
The President made the announcement when Most Reverend Philip Naameh, Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of Tamale, paid a courtesy call on him at the Presidency in Accra.
According to President Mahama, the establishment of the university will receive initial funding support from a $30 million grant pledged by the President of China during his recent state visit to Ghana.
“The Catholic Science and Technology University will play a strategic role in producing the next generation of medical doctors, engineers, and professionals for the northern sector,” President Mahama said.
“We are ensuring that Damongo not only gets the university, but also a regional hospital that will serve as a teaching facility linked to the university’s Faculty of Medical Sciences.”
He explained that the government’s broader intention is to strengthen technical education across the country.
“As part of our national development agenda, we are fully committed to upgrading Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to drive industrial growth, job creation, and innovation,” he noted.
Archbishop Naameh, who led the Catholic delegation, expressed appreciation to the President and emphasized the importance of expanding higher education to underserved areas in northern Ghana.
“This initiative will greatly enhance access to professional training and contribute to reducing inequalities in educational opportunities,” the Archbishop stated.
He said the Catholic Church remains committed to supporting the government in the delivery of health and educational services to communities nationwide.
