President John Dramani Mahama has called for a deliberate and sustainable financing framework for sports development, describing it as a critical but often neglected component of Ghana’s broader development agenda.
Speaking at a Presidential Dialogue with the Private Sector held at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, President Mahama urged corporate Ghana to rethink its engagement with sports, not as charity, but as a strategic investment in national progress.
“No country achieves sporting excellence without deliberate and sustainable funding systems,” President Mahama said. “Sports development does not happen by chance. It requires planning, structure, and long-term financing.”
Sports Beyond Recreation
The President stressed that sports should be viewed as an economic and social sector with measurable development returns, particularly in youth employment, national cohesion, and international competitiveness.
“Sports is not just about recreation or entertainment,” he noted. “It is about jobs, health, discipline, national unity, and global visibility. When properly financed, sports can become a serious contributor to economic growth.”
President Mahama pointed out that many successful sporting nations have built strong domestic sports economies through public–private partnerships, clear governance structures, and predictable funding streams.
Call to Corporate Ghana
Addressing business leaders, the President invited the private sector to play a more active role in building a sustainable sports ecosystem, emphasising that such involvement should be mutually beneficial.
“I invite corporate Ghana to see sports financing not as philanthropy, but as a partnership for national development,” he stated.
“There are real economic opportunities in sports—through infrastructure development, sports tourism, broadcasting rights, merchandising, and talent development.”
He added that structured private sector participation would help professionalise sports administration, improve facilities, and support talent identification from the grassroots to elite levels.
Aligning Sports with National Development Goals
President Mahama explained that strengthening sports financing aligns with the government’s wider objective of inclusive growth and human capital development.
“When we invest in our young people through sports, we are investing in discipline, skills, and opportunity,” he said. “This is how we build a confident, healthy, and productive nation.”
The Presidential Dialogue formed part of ongoing engagements between government and the private sector aimed at mobilising domestic capital, strengthening partnerships, and accelerating Ghana’s economic transformation across both traditional and emerging sectors.
