President John Dramani Mahama has announced that construction of the long-anticipated Afram Plains Bridge also known as the Adawso–Ekye Amanfrom Bridge will begin in June 2026.
The project, awarded to Sonitra, will involve the construction of a 3.6-kilometre bridge across the Afram River. Once completed, it will replace the existing pontoon ferry service that has served residents of the Afram Plains for decades.
Speaking on the initiative, President Mahama described the bridge as a transformative infrastructure project that will significantly improve connectivity between the Eastern Region and the Afram Plains enclave.
“This bridge is a game-changer for the people of Afram Plains. It will enhance connectivity, boost trade, and ensure the smooth movement of people and goods,” he stated.
The President noted that the current reliance on ferry transport has posed persistent challenges for residents, particularly during breakdowns and peak travel periods.
“For far too long, our people have depended on a ferry system that is often unreliable. This project will provide a permanent and efficient solution to those challenges,” he added.
President Mahama emphasized that the Afram Plains Bridge forms part of a broader national infrastructure agenda aimed at opening up underserved areas and accelerating economic development.
“We are committed to investing in infrastructure that connects our communities, stimulates local economies, and ensures inclusive growth across the country,” he stressed.
The construction of the bridge is expected to significantly improve access to markets, reduce travel time, and unlock the economic potential of the Afram Plains area once completed.
