President John Dramani Mahama has led the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in paying tribute to its founder and former President, Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, by officially renaming the party’s national headquarters the Jerry John Rawlings House.

The ceremony, held to commemorate what would have been Rawlings’ 79th birthday, also featured the unveiling of a bust of the late statesman, whose influence continues to shape Ghana’s political landscape and democratic journey.

Addressing party faithful and dignitaries, President Mahama reflected on Rawlings’ character, leadership, and commitment to public service.

He revealed that despite his immense contributions to the nation, Rawlings consistently declined suggestions to have national monuments named after him, preferring instead to remain focused on service rather than personal recognition.

President Mahama described the renaming of the headquarters as a fitting tribute to a leader whose vision and sacrifices laid the foundation for one of Ghana’s most influential political parties.

He urged Ghanaians, particularly members of the NDC, to honour Rawlings not merely through monuments and ceremonies, but by embracing the principles that defined his public life: probity, accountability, integrity, and selfless service to the nation.

The event brought together senior party officials, supporters, and admirers of the former President, many of whom hailed Rawlings’ enduring legacy as a champion of democratic governance and social justice.

By immortalising his name at the heart of the party he founded, the NDC signalled its determination to preserve the ideals of Jerry John Rawlings and inspire future generations to place national interest above personal gain.

The renaming of the headquarters and unveiling of the bust stand as enduring symbols of Rawlings’ place in Ghana’s history and the lasting impact of his leadership on the country’s political development.
