The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has raised serious concerns over the custody status and legal handling of convicted former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedinam Tamakloe Attionu, following reports of her admission into prison custody.
Addressing the media on Thursday, the lawmaker stated that intelligence available to his team indicated the convicted former CEO was admitted into a correctional facility on Wednesday following sustained public and political pressure.
According to him, there are backstage indications that assurances may have been given suggesting she could be released once public attention diminishes or after an anticipated court decision is delivered. He did not, however, provide public evidence to support this claim.
Baffour Awuah further revealed that his team had deliberately chosen not to disclose the specific correctional facility where Tamakloe Attionu is being held. He argued that publicizing the location could allow authorities to cite security concerns as grounds for transferring or releasing her away from public scrutiny.
Drawing on his legal background, the lawmaker maintained that any action preventing a convicted individual from serving a court-imposed sentence could amount to interference with a valid court order. Such conduct, he argued, could constitute contempt of court and severely undermine public confidence in the administration of justice.
The legislator also issued a broader warning to government officials, stressing that Ghanaians are increasingly demanding accountability in corruption cases and expect equal treatment under the law regardless of political affiliation.
“The Ghanaian people are watching us very closely as a political class. They are tired of the way and manner government protects their own when it comes to corruption and corruption-related cases. We must be seen to be acting on corruption and not protecting our own,” Baffour Awuah said.
He concluded by stating that he and his colleagues would continue to closely monitor developments surrounding the case and would keep the public informed of any changes regarding the former MASLOC boss’s custody status.
