The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) commemorated the 2026 Day of the Seafarer on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at its Tema Branch, celebrating the immense contributions of seafarers to Ghana’s maritime sector and the global economy.
As part of the celebration, members of the Authority’s management took part in a symbolic frontline service by temporarily leaving their offices to assist seafarers with certification processes.
The gesture underscored the GMA’s appreciation for the men and women whose work sustains international trade.
Speaking at the event, the Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority, Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali (Naval Capt. Rtd), described seafarers as the backbone of global commerce, noting that the world economy depends heavily on the maritime industry.
Drawing inspiration from Ghana’s maritime heritage established under Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah through the Black Star Line, Dr. Ali announced that the Authority will soon roll out the National Seafarer Development Policy. According to him, the policy will provide a comprehensive framework to strengthen the country’s maritime workforce and position seafaring as a viable employment opportunity for Ghanaian youth.
“The maritime sector remains a critical driver of global trade, and Ghana must invest strategically in developing the next generation of seafarers,” he stated.
The Deputy Director-General, Mubarick Masawudu, also paid tribute to seafarers, describing them as the “invisible force” behind the movement of goods across the world.
He reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to improving the welfare of seafarers through digital transformation, enhanced mental health support, and comprehensive career guidance services.
Mr. Masawudu further announced the forthcoming National Seafarer Development Placement Programme, an initiative aimed at expanding sea-time opportunities for young Ghanaian seafarers through strategic partnerships with international shipowners and manning agencies.
The celebration highlighted the Ghana Maritime Authority’s continued efforts to recognize the dedication of seafarers while advancing policies and programmes that will create sustainable career pathways for the country’s growing maritime workforce.
