The Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), Major General Maxwell Obuba Mantey, has issued a strong warning to young people about the growing threat posed by synthetic drugs, describing some of the substances currently circulating as more dangerous than cocaine.

Addressing participants at the National Youth Forum, Major General Mantey expressed concern over the increasing popularity of synthetic drugs commonly referred to as “Colorado,” “Coloso” or “Colaro,” urging young people to avoid experimentation and seek help if they are struggling with addiction.

According to him, the substances often contain dangerous chemicals and pesticides that can cause severe damage to vital organs, including the liver, kidneys and intestines.

“These drugs are extremely dangerous and their effects can be severe and unpredictable,” he cautioned.

The NACOC Director-General warned that even a single attempt at using the drugs could lead to dependency, stressing that many users are unaware of the harmful ingredients used in their production.

He emphasized that the Commission’s mandate extends beyond arrests and prosecutions to include prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and recovery services for individuals battling substance abuse.

Major General Mantey encouraged those facing addiction challenges to seek professional support from NACOC’s counseling and treatment units, assuring them that seeking help would not result in prosecution.

“Seeking help for a drug problem should never be a source of shame. Recovery is possible, and the earlier one seeks support, the better the chances of overcoming addiction,” he said.

He also urged young people not to be influenced by social media trends that glamorize drug use and called on families, communities, schools and government institutions to work together in combating substance abuse.

The Director-General further disclosed that government has strengthened the legal and operational framework for tackling drug trafficking and peddling, enabling NACOC to intensify enforcement activities against those involved in the illicit trade.

He called on all stakeholders to join the fight against narcotics, stressing that protecting the future of Ghana’s youth requires collective action and sustained public education.
