Dr. Edem Segbefia Highlights Mahama’s Works, Housing and Water Reforms, Urges NDC Grassroots to Champion Government Achievements

Aspiring National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Edem Segbefia, has commended the reforms being implemented in the works, housing and water resources sectors under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama, describing them as transformative interventions that are improving livelihoods and driving sustainable national development.

Addressing NDC grassroots members during an interactive engagement in the Bono Region, Dr. Segbefia said the Mahama administration had adopted a clear development agenda centred on “Build Ghana, House Ghanaians, Water for All,” aimed at restoring critical infrastructure, expanding access to affordable housing and ensuring clean water reaches communities across the country.

He noted that prior to January 2025, many communities struggled with deteriorating road networks, limited access to affordable housing and persistent water shortages, particularly in northern Ghana. According to him, the current administration is reversing that trend through deliberate investments in infrastructure and public services.

“When a road connects a farmer to the market, when a tap provides a mother with clean drinking water, and when young people secure employment on construction projects, that is the NDC changing lives,” Dr. Segbefia stated.

He said government had resumed several abandoned trunk, feeder and urban road projects across the country, including in the Bono Region, with contractors returning to project sites following the settlement of outstanding payments.

He added that priority is being given to roads linking farming communities to markets to reduce transportation costs and post-harvest losses, while damaged bridges and culverts are being rehabilitated ahead of the rainy season.

On housing, Dr. Segbefia said stalled public housing projects are being reviewed and completed to provide accommodation for public sector workers, young professionals and low-income families.

He also highlighted government partnerships with private developers and mortgage institutions to expand access to affordable housing through flexible financing arrangements.

He further indicated that drainage systems, sanitation facilities and community water points are being developed in underserved urban communities to improve living conditions.

Touching on water resources, Dr. Segbefia said government is expanding access to potable water through the construction of boreholes, mechanised water systems and small-town water projects, particularly in the Northern, Savannah and Upper East regions. He added that measures are also being implemented to improve water supply reliability in towns such as Bolgatanga, Bawku and Nalerigu.

According to him, government has intensified efforts to protect rivers and other water bodies through stronger enforcement against pollution, while investing in dams, dugouts and irrigation infrastructure to support dry-season farming and strengthen climate resilience.

He also cited flood prevention measures, including the desilting of major drains and improved coordination between the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources, local assemblies and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to reduce the impact of seasonal flooding.

Dr. Segbefia said these infrastructure projects are creating employment opportunities for local artisans, masons, welders, carpenters, drivers and suppliers, while stimulating economic activity in host communities.

He encouraged NDC grassroots members to actively promote government achievements by documenting completed projects, mobilising local youth to access employment opportunities created under infrastructure programmes and encouraging eligible beneficiaries to participate in affordable housing initiatives.

He further urged party members to organise community durbars and public engagements to celebrate completed roads, water systems and housing projects, stressing that visible development should be communicated directly to citizens.

“Development must not only be delivered; it must also be communicated. Every completed road, every functioning borehole and every housing project is evidence that government is fulfilling its commitments to the people,” he said.

Dr. Segbefia concluded by urging party supporters to continue engaging communities with what he described as the government’s development message.

“Go into every community, every market, every construction site and every water point and tell the story of development. Let the people see that the NDC is building Ghana, housing Ghanaians and bringing clean water to our people,” he stated.
