Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has begun preparations for the rehabilitation of three major water treatment plants under a GH¢8.4 million project funded by the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), with the company’s Managing Director, Adam Mutawakilu, inspecting the facilities ahead of the commencement of works.
The rehabilitation project will restore the Bonsa, Daboase and Sekyere-Hemang Water Supply Systems, which serve thousands of residents in the Western and Central Regions. The initiative follows an independent technical assessment that identified critical challenges affecting the systems’ operations.
During the working visit, Mr. Mutawakilu toured the Bonsa Water Treatment Plant in Tarkwa, the Daboase Water Treatment Plant, which supplies the Takoradi Metropolis and neighbouring communities, and the Sekyere-Hemang Water Treatment Plant in the Central Region to assess their operational conditions before rehabilitation begins.
At the Bonsa facility, the Managing Director inspected the persistent siltation at the raw water abstraction point, a major challenge that has affected water production. He also commended engineers in the Western Region for developing an improvised floating abstraction pump to sustain operations, while stressing that the rehabilitation project would provide a permanent engineering solution.
Beyond the inspections, Mr. Mutawakilu met with management and staff in the Western and Central Regions to review operational performance and discuss measures to improve service delivery. The discussions focused on key performance indicators, revenue mobilisation, billing and collection, meter reading, customer service, reducing Non-Revenue Water (NRW), staff accountability and strengthening performance monitoring systems.
Regional managers presented updates on their achievements, ongoing interventions and operational challenges, while staff shared suggestions for improving efficiency. Employees described the Managing Director’s engagement as a morale booster that encouraged open communication and reinforced teamwork across the company.
Mr. Mutawakilu urged staff to uphold professionalism, innovation, teamwork and accountability, noting that the success of the GoldBod-funded rehabilitation project would depend not only on infrastructure upgrades but also on a strong performance culture within Ghana Water Ltd.
The inspection tour forms part of GWL’s broader strategy to strengthen employee engagement, assess operational realities on the ground and ensure the GH¢8.4 million rehabilitation project delivers lasting improvements in water production, infrastructure resilience and reliable potable water supply to communities in the Western and Central Regions.
