Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that Ghana is finalizing a national space policy to establish its inaugural state space institution, positioning the country to join the global community of spacefaring nations.

Speaking at a reception in Accra honoring Japanese astronaut and Axiom Space Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Koichi Wakata, the Foreign Minister highlighted the historic milestone as a testament to Ghana’s ambition to build indigenous capacity in science, technology, and aerospace research.

Ablakwa described Dr. Wakata’s visit to Ghana as his first to the African continent which he describes as a profound source of inspiration for Ghanaian youth, particularly students preparing for national STEM competitions. Drawing parallels between Japan’s rise in human spaceflight and Ghana’s scientific aspirations, the Minister emphasized that vision, targeted investment, and strategic leadership can transform ambitious goals into reality.

”Japan’s journey proves that with the right investment, character, and leadership, greatness is attainable,” Ablakwa said. “Ghana is determined to follow this path. We believe that in our lifetime, or through the generation of young scholars being inspired today, Ghana will produce its first national astronaut.”

The Minister outlined expanding bilateral cooperation between Accra and Tokyo across diplomatic, academic, and technological fronts. Highlighting existing institutional partnerships between the University of Ghana and Japanese organizations, Ablakwa noted that the government will continue leveraging these strategic frameworks to advance national interests.

The reception also served to preview three major diplomatic milestones to be commemorated next year: the 70th anniversary of formal bilateral relations between Ghana and Japan, the 50th anniversary of the Japanese Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) program in Ghana, and the centenary of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi’s pioneering medical research in the country.

”From the legacy of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi in medical research to Dr. Koichi Wakata in space exploration, Japan continues to offer Ghana exceptional symbols of partnership,” the Minister remarked. “Our bilateral relations remain a winning, mutually beneficial model spanning infrastructure, economic investments, maritime security, and now frontier technology.”
