The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused the government of attempting to bypass parliamentary oversight to reintroduce the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy). He claimed that while the previous administration adhered strictly to legislative processes when implementing fiscal measures, the current administration is actively sidestepping Parliament.
Afenyo-Markin argued that despite its fierce resistance to the E-Levy while in opposition, the ruling party has reversed its stance. He alleged that the government is now attempting to utilize a private entity to impose an additional financial burden on citizens.
The critique follows a statement from the Bank of Ghana announcing a suspension of a 0.75% electronic charge to allow for further stakeholder consultations. However, the Minority Leader maintained that a temporary suspension is insufficient, demanding full accountability instead.
Furthermore, Afenyo-Markin called on the Finance Minister to appear before Parliament immediately to clarify the situation. He criticized the administration’s governance style, characterizing it as a “government of settings” that has consistently failed to properly execute its own policies.
Concluding his remarks, the Minority Leader highlighted a series of what he termed failed government initiatives and campaign promises, asserting that the current administration fundamentally lacks transparency in its policy decisions.
