The Pan African Bank, Ecobank Ghana Limited is making a strong case for financial and business journalism in the country.
According to the bank which is a subsidiary of Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI), financial and business journalism is crucial to the socio economic development of the country.
Speaking at the opening of a two day business and financial workshop for members of the Journalist for Business Advocacy (JBA) in Accra, Head of Corporate Communications of the bank, Mrs. Rita Nana Aba Tsegah emphasized the need for financial inclusion and financial literacy among the citizenry particularly the underserved in the country.
“It is key for empowering the deprived and the vulnerable sectors and person in Ghana. It is also a key developmental issue on the agenda for government”, she stressed.
The Head of Corporate Communications of Ecobank also pointed out the impacts the workshops over the past five consecutive years are having on financial and business reporting in the country.
“I’m particularly delighted to know from your executives the positive impacts made by these workshops. I am informed that business journalists today are taking the concept of specialization seriously exhibiting knowledge of the basic concepts of reporting financial matters which has contributed to an enhance economic and financial reporting”.
For his part, President of the Journalist for Business Advocacy, Suleiman Mustapha expressed gratitude to Ecobank Ghana for the unflinching assistance to help build the capacity of members of JBA with particular focus on business and financial reporting.
He also urged other corporate institutions to come on board to help enhance the skills and knowledge of business and financial journalists in the country.
Mr. Musrapha also disclosed that next year JBA intends to replicate the training of journalists in financial and business reporting to other parts of the country hence the need for continuous support from other corporate organizations since he is rest assured that Ecobank will still be the leading financial institution to support the training programmes of JBA.
The event which was under the theme “Understanding Ghana’s Financial Sector Reforms: The Role of the Journalists,” saw the attendance of the regulator of the banking sector and other officials of the Central Bank and officers of Ecobank Ghana Limited.
