All mixed drinks containing both alcohol and stimulants must be removed from the Ghanaian market by the end of March 2026. This was announced by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in a notice issued on February 25, 2026.

According to the FDA, the decision follows a post-registration review assessing the safety of products combining alcohol with stimulants such as caffeine, ginseng, guarana, and inositol.

The review, guided by international precedents and supported by the FDA’s Technical Advisory Committee on Food Safety and Nutrition, found that these drinks pose serious health risks, particularly to youth and young adults.

The authority directed all importers, manufacturers, and distributors to clear affected products without sanctions before the deadline. After March 2026, non-compliant products will face regulatory action, including market withdrawal.

The FDA further stated that manufacturers must reformulate these beverages to comply with approved standards for alcoholic beverages and energy drinks as separate categories.

The FDA emphasized its commitment to public health and urged consumers to report any suspicious or non-compliant products for investigation.
