The Republic of Ghana and the Russian Federation has successfully concluded a Technical Session of Political Consultations on March 12, 2026, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration in Accra. The session provided a high-level platform for both nations to evaluate the current state of bilateral relations and identify strategic pathways for future economic and technical cooperation.

The consultations opened with remarks from Harold Adlai Agyeman, Coordinating Director of Political and Economic Affairs for Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He emphasized that the 68-year partnership remains firmly anchored in mutual respect and solidarity, consistently nurtured through proactive political dialogue, robust educational exchanges, and shared objectives within multilateral frameworks.

The Ghanaian delegation was led by Ambassador Eric Owusu-Boateng, Director of the Europe Bureau, while the Russian Federation was represented by Anatoly Bashkin, Director of the Department of African States.

Economic deliberations centered on expanding bilateral trade, with specific focus on agriculture, manufacturing, infrastructure development, and energy diversification. Both delegations emphasized the importance of technology transfer and the expansion of university partnerships in Science, Engineering, Technology, and Medicine.

Furthermore, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to finalizing outstanding bilateral legal instruments to provide a more robust framework for these shared ambitions.
The technical session also facilitated a comprehensive exchange on regional and multilateral issues, including the evolving security situation in the Sahel and preparatory milestones for the upcoming Third Russia-Africa Summit scheduled for October 2026.

Following the session, Anatoly Bashkin paid a courtesy call to the Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Khadija Iddrisu. While both sides expressed satisfaction with the progress of the consultations, the meeting also addressed critical legal and security matters.

Ghana has formally requested Russia’s cooperation in holding a Russian national accountable for the non-consensual publication of explicit images involving Ghanaian women, a request to which the Russian side pledged its cooperation.

Additionally, the country raised urgent concerns regarding the enlistment of Ghanaian youth in Russia’s ongoing military operations. Both parties concluded the session by agreeing to work together to address and resolve this issue through sustained diplomatic engagement.
