The Ghana Police Service has commenced a specialised intelligence training programme for officers of its Police Intelligence Directorate in collaboration with the Federal Bureau of Investigation aimed at enhancing crime detection, prevention and operational planning capabilities.
The training programme, held on May 11, 2026, at the Police Academy, brought together officers of the Ghana Police Service and facilitators from the United States Department of Justice and the FBI.
Addressing participants at the opening ceremony, Director-General of the Police Intelligence Directorate, COP/Mr. Peter Baba Atiniak, described the programme as a significant step toward strengthening intelligence-led policing in Ghana.
He noted that the increasing sophistication of crime requires advanced knowledge and practical skills to effectively combat criminal activities.
According to him, the training is designed to equip personnel with expertise in intelligence gathering, analysis and operational planning to support police leadership in detecting, preventing and solving crimes.
COP Atiniak said the initiative aligns with the vision of the Ghana Police Service to become a world-class policing institution under the leadership of Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
“For that matter we are privileged to have officers from the FBI, USA to facilitate, teach and guide officers in the field of intelligence and operational planning,” he stated.
He urged participants to cooperate fully with facilitators in order to acquire the requisite competencies needed to handle complex security challenges.
The event was attended by members of the Police Management Board, the Commandant of the Police Academy, DCOP Dr. Gustav Yankson, representatives from the U.S. Embassy in Ghana, facilitators from the FBI and members of the media fraternity.
The collaboration is expected to deepen international cooperation between Ghanaian law enforcement agencies and their U.S. counterparts while improving the operational efficiency of the Police Intelligence Directorate in tackling emerging security threats.
