Accra, Ghana – July 30, 2025.
The Ministry of Roads and Highways has announced the commencement of procurement processes for the implementation of the 2025 Routine and Periodic Road Maintenance Programmes, aimed at preserving the country’s existing road infrastructure.
Delivering the update during the Government Accountability Series at Jubilee House, Roads Minister Hon. Kwame Governs Agbodza emphasized that maintenance is a key pillar of government’s strategy to sustain infrastructure investments and support economic growth.
“We are not only focused on building new roads.
Preserving and maintaining existing ones is equally critical to ensure safety, reduce rehabilitation costs, and support the 24-hour economy,” he stated.
Key Objectives of the 2025 Maintenance Programme:
Preserve existing road infrastructure to avoid costly deterioration
Enhance safety, ride quality, and transport reliability
Reduce long-term rehabilitation costs through preventive interventions
The expanded maintenance strategy will cover feeder roads, highways, and urban roads across all 16 regions, with special emphasis on critical transport corridors supporting continuous movement of goods and services—a foundational requirement for the government’s 24-hour economy policy.
Hon. Agbodza noted that the procurement process is already underway and will be guided by performance-based contracts and transparent vetting to ensure value for money.
The initiative complements recent reforms under the newly established Road Maintenance Trust Fund, which guarantees more sustainable funding for road upkeep across the country.
