The education minister-designate, Haruna Iddrisu has proposed setting aside at least 5 to 6 percent of the country’s GDP to fund education.
Haruna Iddrisu said this during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee.
The Tamale South member of parliament stated that President Mahama’s administration remained steadfast in its commitment to improving access to education and quality at all levels.
He reaffirmed the NDC government’s commitment to increasing enrollment while also elevating the quality of education nationwide.
Haruna Iddrisu’s proposal includes the uncapping of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), which has been a critical source of funding for education infrastructure and resources.
He explains that by improving the GETfund which has been a vital resource for financing educational infrastructure and resources.
He says by optimizing resources from GETfund, the government can significantly enhance educational facilities and resources available to students.
The minister-designate also outlined an ambitious plan to establish a model Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) school in every region of the country.
He said the move was to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in a rapidly evolving global economy, emphasizing the importance of STEM education for Ghana’s future.
He underscored the government’s commitment to closing the education gap, ensuring that students in all parts of the country have equitable access to quality education.
