President John Dramani Mahama has charged the newly sworn-in Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe Bonnie, to uphold the constitutional mandate of the judiciary and fortify public trust in Ghana’s justice system.
Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony at the Jubilee House, President Mahama described the occasion as a “solemn and historic moment” that reinforces Ghana’s commitment to the rule of law and democratic governance.
“As Chief Justice, you are the symbol and guarantor of justice for our people,” President Mahama stated.
“I charge you to defend the Constitution, strengthen judicial integrity, and lead with courage—even when decisions are difficult or unpopular.”
He emphasized that judicial independence is central to Ghana’s democracy, adding: “An independent judiciary is not a favour to the courts; it is a constitutional necessity and a protection for every citizen, including the President.”
The President highlighted the urgent need to safeguard the integrity of the judiciary by enforcing strong disciplinary systems, transparent case management, and swift action on misconduct. “Our citizens must know that justice in Ghana is not for sale,” he stressed.
President Mahama also called for reforms to make justice more accessible, timely, and affordable for ordinary citizens. He urged modernization of court infrastructure, reduction of case backlogs, and increased adoption of technology such as virtual hearings and e-filing systems.
Describing the courts as the “last refuge for the vulnerable,” he encouraged the new Chief Justice to protect the rights of the poor, marginalized, and powerless, and to strengthen specialized divisions such as family, juvenile, land, commercial, and environmental courts.
The President pledged his administration’s full cooperation: “I assure you and the entire Judicial Service of the support of my government as you undertake your sacred mandate.”
Justice Baffoe Bonnie assumes office with decades of experience on the bench and is expected to lead efforts to restore confidence in the justice delivery system.
