President John Dramani Mahama has held bilateral talks with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan in Arusha, focusing on strengthening political, economic, and diplomatic relations between Ghana and Tanzania.
The discussions took place on the margins of President Mahama’s visit to Tanzania for the opening of the 2026 Judicial Year and the 20th anniversary of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
Both leaders reaffirmed the longstanding historical ties between Ghana and Tanzania, rooted in the shared Pan-African vision of their founding leaders, and agreed on the need to translate that legacy into stronger contemporary cooperation.
Key issues discussed included the establishment of a Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC) to provide a structured framework for collaboration ahead of a proposed state visit, as well as expanded cooperation in mining, agriculture, value addition, digitalization, fintech, and cybersecurity.
President Mahama shared Ghana’s recent policy measures to exercise greater sovereignty over natural resources, particularly in gold exports, and outlined plans to boost local processing and value addition in the cocoa sector.
President Samia, on her part, highlighted Tanzania’s economic transformation agenda, driven by industrialization, value addition, human capital development, and climate resilience.
The two leaders also exchanged views on regional peace, democratic governance, and reconciliation, with President Samia briefing her Ghanaian counterpart on post-election stabilization efforts in Tanzania.
On continental and global issues, the meeting touched on African integration, support for the African human rights architecture, and Ghana’s leadership role on reparative justice within the African Union.
Both sides emphasized the importance of unity and dialogue in addressing emerging geopolitical tensions and safeguarding Africa’s development gains.
The bilateral talks underscored the mutual commitment of Accra and Dodoma to deepen Ghana–Tanzania relations and to advance a shared agenda for African cooperation, justice, and sustainable development.
