Accra, Ghana – April 25, 2025
President John Dramani Mahama has officially sworn in the recently appointed military service commanders as members of the Ghana Armed Forces Council.
The ceremony took place on Friday at the Ministry of Defence and was immediately followed by a meeting of the Council, where members discussed critical issues including promotions and the retooling of the Ghana Armed Forces.
The newly sworn-in commanders are:
Major General William Agyapong, Chief of Defence Staff
Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, Chief of Army Staff
Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, Chief of Naval Staff
Air Vice Marshal Eric Agyen-Frempong, Chief of Air Staff
The event brought together top government officials and council members, including Minister for Defence Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for the Interior Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka, and Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
Also in attendance were Secretary to the President Dr. Callistus Mahama and Special Aide to the President Joyce Bawah Mogtari.
The Armed Forces Council, mandated to advise the President on military policy and strategy, plays a key role in ensuring national security and the operational effectiveness of the Ghana Armed Forces.
