John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has made a significant pledge to support new parents in Ghana.
He promises to extend maternity leave by an additional month, bringing it to a total of four months, and introduce a week-long paternity leave policy if he wins the 2024 general elections.
Key Proposals:
- Extended Maternity Leave: Increase maternity leave from three months to four months to allow mothers to monitor their child’s development before returning to work.
- Paternity Leave: Introduce a week-long paternity leave for fathers to assist mothers and bond with their newborns during the critical post-birth period.
- Eligibility: Paternity leave would be limited to legally married men who can provide proof of marriage.
This move aims to provide parental support during the early months of a child’s life, recognizing the importance of both parents playing an active role in childcare. By extending maternity leave and introducing paternity leave, Mahama hopes to promote a better work-life balance and support families during a crucial period.
