Techiman, Bono East Region
President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his party’s commitment to economic recovery, stating that despite inheriting a country plagued by economic hardship, progress is being made to restore stability and hope.
Speaking during his “Thank You” tour in the Bono East Region, Mr. Mahama painted a stark picture of the economic conditions he claims were left behind, citing high inflation, unsustainable debt levels, a depreciating currency, widespread unemployment, and growing public disillusionment.
“We inherited an economy with high inflation, unsustainable debt, a weakening currency, mass unemployment and widespread despondency,” the former president told supporters. “But we are turning the corner.”
Mr. Mahama emphasized that although the road to recovery has been challenging, the signs of progress are beginning to show.
He called on Ghanaians to remain patient and hopeful as efforts to stabilize the economy take effect.
The tour, which forms part of his engagements with grassroots supporters following his election as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, has seen Mr. Mahama visiting several regions to thank delegates and supporters while outlining his vision for national renewal.
Economic recovery and job creation have emerged as central themes in Mahama’s messaging as he gears up for the 2024 general elections.
His remarks appear to be a direct critique of the current administration’s handling of the economy, positioning the NDC as a ready alternative with a plan to restore growth and social confidence.
As Ghana continues to grapple with inflationary pressures and currency volatility, Mahama’s comments are likely to resonate with citizens feeling the pinch of rising living costs and economic uncertainty.
