The bid to repeal the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) Act has been suspended, with the Majority Leader of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, announcing his decision to reconsider the proposed legislation after receiving a direct appeal from His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama.
Ayariga confirmed that he and the Majority Chief Whip, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor had co-signed the private member’s bill, which had secured approval from the Private Members Committee and was set to proceed through the House. However, speaking in Parliament today, the Majority Leader stated the process has been put on an indefinite hold.
”I had submitted the bill, and it had been duly accepted by the committee. But upon receiving the request from President Mahama, whose judgment I have immense confidence in, I decided to immediately put the bill on hold,” Hon. Ayariga stated on the floor.
The Majority Leader emphasized that his decision was made in the spirit of collective leadership, acknowledging the importance of presidential input on a matter of national significance.
He invoked the proverb that “two heads are better than one” and assured the House that he remains open to finding an alternative, better way forward through collaboration with the Executive.
